@anildash and “The Pushbutton Web”
If you haven’t yet, take some time to read through Anil Dash’s great summary of what he calls “The Pushbutton Web”. While Twitter’s founders would like to see the service “fade into the background” it’s important to remember that when that happens, Twitter would have what one might arguably call a monopoly. The user suffers when one particular service achieves a default status (no pun intended).
The Pushbutton Web provides a truly free and open alternative to Twitter’s real time functionality, unconstrained by cumbersome licensing and Twitter’s self-serving drive towards profitability. While Twitter’s founders might be able to trick themselves into believing that Twitter should be considered a ‘technology’, I’m sure Twitter’s investors would disagree.
SMS never had shareholders.
